POSITION: Police Officer
RESPONSIBLE TO: Police Chief
SALARY: $3173/month – $4050/month
CLASSIFICATION: Hourly, regular, full-time
LOCATION: City of Coquille
Police Department
Coquille, Oregon
Purpose
The general purpose of this position is to affirmatively promote a feeling of safety and security through the safe, efficient, effective, and lawful performance of duties and functions.
Major Responsibilities
The following duties are not intended to serve as a comprehensive list of all duties performed by the employee in this classification, only a representative summary of the primary duties and responsibilities. Incumbent may not be required to perform all duties listed and may be required to perform additional, position-specific duties.
The Officer must efficiently utilize department resources, and implement appropriate solutions, to reduce personal job problems before being directed to do so by the Sergeant.
The general responsibilities of the officer relate to the assigned tactical and patrol duties assigned them by the Sergeant. Additionally:
- This position requires consistent attention and commitment to the Department’s mission, goals, and objectives. All assigned duties and tasks are expected to be performed in an effective, efficient, and safe manner.
- Personal conduct and behavior (on duty as well as off duty) must be such that it does not bring disrepute or unnecessarily endanger the public’s trust or confidence in the Department or its members.
- This position requires a high level of problem solving ability, self-initiative, and the ability and willingness to work a majority of time without direct supervision. Successful performers are those who are capable of making, and willing to make, decisions that are consistently in line with the Department’s mission, goals, objectives, policies and procedures.
Major Duties
The number of tactical/patrol performed by the Officer requires him/her to self-initiate public relations, and perform work in association areas determined to be Department priorities.
Daily routines require taking calls for service, patrolling to deter and detect crime, investigating complaints, citing and/or arresting law violators, following up on pending reports and cases, preparing and/or serving civil processes, protecting persons and property, interacting with the general citizenry while performing community policing duties, and securing and protecting prisoners. When not responding to calls for service, the officer, the officer is expected to use self-direct work time in an efficient manner by self-initiating work on those tasks identified by supervision personnel as priorities for this job position. As necessary, the officer may be required to temporarily ass the duties, activities, and tasks of the first-line supervision.

- Driving emergency vehicles under stressful conditions.
- Qualifying with firearms and other offensive and defensive weapons.
- Having the physical, mental, medical, and psychological ability to protect the general safety of the public at all times.
- Using physical force to control and arrest law violators.
- Exercising rational judgment in day-to-day decision making tasks.
- Maintaining the confidence and trust of peers, superiors, and general citizenry.
- Working independence of direct supervision.
Essential Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
The applicant shall be able to demonstrate the following qualities:
- A valid Oregon driver’s license.
- Certification as a peace officer in the State of Oregon.
- Read, understand, and interpret content of general law enforcement reference materials.
- Read, understand, and interpret content of Oregon Revised Code.
- Be computer literate.
- Be physically fit and agile.
- Be in good mental health, and physical health.
- Demonstrate proper use of basic law enforcement practices.
- Demonstrates ability to make tactical/patrol decisions.
- Complete detailed and accurate required documental in a timely fashion.
- Other duties and tasks are assigned by the Department.
General Work Conditions
Work conditions vary by shift. The majority of tasks are performed outside while working from a police cruiser. Few tasks require heavy loads. Flexibility is important because of the need to enter and exit vehicles frequently, inspect buildings, climb over and around obstacles, suddenly move out of the way of dangers, etc. Mental alertness is very important because of the need to make fine discriminations and decisions concerning subtle cues of impending danger or to discover inconsistencies in witnesses or suspects’ testimonies, etc. However, physical and mental demands may change dramatically within a few seconds and tax the maximum of human endurance. Therefore, officers must maintain a physical and mental state of fitness and readiness that will enable them to handle (with minimal force and often without backup) recurrent contacts and involvement with dangerous and potentially dangerous people, animals, and equipment.
Cause for Dismissal
Notice: Employees who are covered by contract, and/or due process shall only be dismissed for good cause, and after following requisite procedures and processes. Examples of the basis for good cause include, but are not limited to: the inability to attend to work regularly, chronic illness, failure to produce a “fair share” of work in a consistent manner, and/or a failure to perform competently on any of the critical tasks of the position, or a failure to perform competently on regular tasks. Good cause also includes failure to: support the Department’s mission, uphold the oath of office, behave in a manner that supports the professional Code of Ethics, continually comply with preconditions for original employment, or display due regard for the civil liberties of any persons.
