Disappointment Setting in Over Pool
Disappointment is setting in at Coquille City Hall this week as the reality of needing an additional $300,000 to build a new community swimming pool sets in.
“Without some funding I just don’t see any way for us to do it,” Coquille City Manager Terence O’Connor told Coquille-Today.Com.
O’Connor has been going over the architect’s plans and construction plans looking for ways to save money. The plans call for excavation of an additional five feet of dirt around the pools current shell, thinking that could save a little. However, during some conditions pools can pop out of the ground, so there was no saving there.
The pool could be built without water features. But the pool is basically for children who bob up and down rather than swimming, trying to beat the summer weather. Some have complained that the new pool won’t be deep enough at 54 inches. But it is deep enough for swimming laps and includes two lanes to accommodate that.
“There are just not a lot of people swimming laps at the pool,” O’Connor said.
The Coquille Pool Committee’s grant writer is currently on vacation. However, upon their return letters will be sent to the major granting agencies asking for an additional $50,000 each.
It was earlier though that construction could begin will an additional $167,000, but O’Connor has determined that it just isn’t enough.
“We could go for about $250,000, but to feel comfortable you really need $300,000,” he said. “If you know of anyone that has $100,000 or so that they don’t need…”

Coquille-Today.Com has always supported the Coquille Swimming Pool Committee in their effort to see a new pool built. However, as a news source, Coquille-Today.Com cannot be concerned with whether a story is either positive or negative. We report facts.
The facts are as reported:
1. There isn’t enough funding currently to build the new pool
2. There have been complaints regarding the design of the new facility
3. “Yes,” some people are disappointed.
Coquille-Today.Com will continue to support efforts to build a new Coquille Community Swimming Pool, and continue reporting facts.

I think that we need to survey how many kids verus adults that go there. I personally think that it should be for the kids, that is who makes 90% of the money for the pool, forget the lap swim and make it deeper so the kids can really enjoy it!
Jo,
The survey you speak of was done years ago.

this pool will get started within the next 5 months. the pool committee knows how important it is to the community! read the article in the sentinel this week (9/28/11) to find out what we have planned! we have worked on this project for 12 years, and now is not the time to give in or give up! pool meetings happen every month on the 1st. tuesday at 1:00p.m. in the small auditorium. the public is always welcome. come hear the latest! next meeting…10/4/11!
You know Ms. Gederos,
When I specifically asked you questions regarding the pool the other day and the anonymous $200,000 donor, you swore me to secrecy and evaded answering until your meeting. Now you have to audacity to ask me to publish a comment by you telling my readers to read “The Sentinel” to find out what’s going on, in an article you told me wouldn’t be published until after the meeting.
I have to tell you that this is exactly the kind of behavior and political gamemansship that has divided this town. You have burned me with your requests not to publish a story twice now, it shant happen again!
Here’s your comment, unlike your preferred publication, I’ll help you get your word out.
By the way, no one I know of mentioned “giving up.”
