Vortex Award Nominee
You have to wonder at what motivates some people to do some of the things they do.
While the story I’m about to tell doesn’t involve any Darwin Award Winners, the “victim” certainly deserves some kind of de-evolutionary achievement award. Perhaps an award for venturing too close to the vortex thereby having their brains sucked through some way too small orifice.
The story begins in the parking lot of Coquille’s very own Safeway Market, conveniently located a block or so from the Coos County Jail, where prisoners having served their sentences, or others for various reasons and sometimes just because, are often released. Last Friday morning jail staff released James Douglas Ray, 49, of Eugene. Ray, being in an obvious hurry to get back to Eugene, took the quickest route he could find back to Highway 42, taking him through the parking lot just before 8 a.m.
Ray was in luck, because parked in the lot was the silver, 2005 Honda Civic left idling and unattended by our proposed yet anonymous victim/award nominee. Finding the pre-warmed automobile, complete with a Pomeranian for companionship, to his liking and fitting into his immediate plans perfectly, Ray sped off leaving our victim/award nominee with only a fleeting description: “A short, stocky, rough looking man.”
Within minutes, police, dispatchers and jail personnel identified Ray as just released and a possible suspect “fitting the description.” With law enforcement alerted, Ray was spotted in the stolen Honda speeding through Coos Bay, the vehicle’s emergency flashers blinking away as though the driver needed some type of beacon. Coos Bay police arrested Ray pretty much without incident, and returned him to the Coos County Jail.
Now here’s the part I take issue with: “Both vehicle and dog were returned to the owner.” I have but a single question: Why?
Anyone that would leave their car running in a parking lot doesn’t have any business owning one let alone driving. As far as the dog goes, it needs a guardian. I hope whatever our anonymous victim/award nominee has isn’t contagious.
I leave readers with a quote from Comedian Ron White, “There is no cure for stupid.”

Editor’s Note: I don’t often publish anonymous comments or those posted under an alias, however, this needs a bit of exposure.
What exactley gives you the right to talk about people this way? Especially since there are only 4,000 people in your little town and everbody knows who your talking about anyway. I mean what makes you so special? Your a nobody that has acomplished very little in your life. Look at you just wasteing your time writting petty articles that mean nothing to anybody. You speak as if you never have made a mistake in your life, and what he did was so out of line. Heres the part I take issue with: somebody is allowing your smug ass to publish this junk.
Leaving the parking brake off is a mistake.
Leaving the door unlocked is a mistake.
Leaving the keys in the ignition and the engine running while one goes into a market isn’t a mistake, it’s stupid plain and simple.
If you want to read garbage to reinforce your personal and societal delusions, read something else. No one forces you on to my website.
There’s more than enough stupidity in these parts to go around. I’m just exposing it for what it is. Thanks for stepping in.
By the way – those wishing to comment must provide their real name and a telephone number to verify it. This is the first and last comment that will posted without a verifiable name. If you want to run off at the keyboard without being accountable for it, The Big City Daily and some of the local bloggers provide a place for that.

It seems to me, that Mr. Jump has a personal problem with this “awardee”, and is using the opinion section of this site to attack them without naming names. Coquille is a small town, so I’m pretty sure a vast majority of people know this indivual whom you say is deserving of said award. I’ll say it again, Coquille is a small town, leaving a vehicle on while running a quick errand is fairly commonplace. Perhaps poor judgement at best, but not worthy of a smear campaign on the internet. Furthermore, how many times have you seen a dog in the bed of a pickup? Do these dogs not need guardianship? If you have a problem with pet owners and their actions, address all of them, don’t just single out one. While this might be an opinion section, don’t use it to address your personal politics and feelings towards somebody who can probably care less what you have to think.
Just to set the record straight – I have no idea what you’re talking about.
I heard the original radio calls being made and the name of the victim/award nominee was not broadcast. I have the dispatch log and the name of the victim/award nominee isn’t disclosed there. I have the original press release and the name of the victim/award nominee isn’t there either. If you care to call the P.D. to check, you’ll find out I never inquired as to who it was.
If it were common to find vehicles running unattended in parking lots a lot more of them would be stolen. That’s an excuse and unverifiable by you or anyone else. I deal in facts, the fact is, someone left their vehicle running unattended and it was stolen.
Could be vegetable or mineral to me I don’t know who it is, and I frankly don’t give a damn.
The point about the dog you seem to have missed is that anyone irresponsible enough to leave their damned car running in a parking lot is too damned irresponsible to care for a pet.
Robert Jump
So all of you who have left your car running while going into the store real quick take your pets to the pound cuase your to irresponsible to care for them….
I leave you with a quote Mr. Jump “if you don’t have anything nice to say don’t say anything at all”
So be it – You’re it!
Robert Jump
Let me leave you with a quote from the Oregon Revised Statutes 811.585 “Failure to secure motor vehicle”
A person commits the offense of failure to secure a motor vehicle if the person is driving or is in charge of a motor vehicle and:
(a) The person permits the vehicle to stand unattended on a highway without first doing all of the following:
(A) Stopping the engine.
(B) Turning the front wheels to the curb or side of the highway when standing upon any grade.
(C) Locking the ignition.
(D) Removing the key from the ignition.
(E) Effectively setting the brake on the vehicle; or
(b) The person is the owner of an unattended motor vehicle parked on a highway in violation of paragraph (a) of this subsection.
I guess the legislature thought it pretty stupid as well.
Dian Courtright 541-396-3191 address 61 E. 1st, Coquille.
First off it must be taken take into account that the victim Brian Courtright is my son, so I do have some personal interest here. As Brian’s mother Jump’s article attacking my son really made me angry. At first I had no intention of responding and fanning the flames of this senseless attack. After reading Jump’s response to Nathan, though, I want to set the record straight. I work for the Coquille Valley Sentinel, we also get the official police log that I believe Jump had access to. Brian Courtright’s name WAS in the police log under victim. Any one who wants proof of that can come down to the Coquille Valley Sentinel and see it for themselves first hand. Also, I called Jill Bounds, who always listens to the scanner and asked her if Brian’s name was mentioned on the scanner and she said it was.
My opinion is that Robert Jump knew who he was making fun of and just didn’t print the name so he couldn’t be held accountable for his actions. Unfortunately, this type of behavior is perfectly acceptable on some internet sites, that are not held to any ethical restrictions.
Now that this bucket of worms has been opened let’s just get right to the bottom of it shall we.
I don’t give a damn if it’s your son left the keys in the car and the engine running or Moses himself. At 8 a.m. I’ve usually just finished publishing and begin other chores such as feeding myself, waking the wife for work and feeding her, in addition to taking the dogs out. I hear snippets from the scanner. When I say I didn’t hear your son’s name it mean’s I didn’t hear his name.
As far as the dispatch log goes, I’ll give you that one. You don’t even have to publish it I will:

On 03-25, 2011 Coquille Police responded to an Unauthorized Use of a Motor Vehicle. A customer of the Coquille Safeway had left his car running and a male subject, later identified as James Douglas Ray, age 49 from Eugene, stole the motor vehicle and exited the parking lot.
Officers put out an attempt to locate to other agencies, and after a short investigation, were able to identify the suspect and broadcast his name and description to the other agencies.
Officers from the Coos Bay Police Department observed the vehicle travelling at a high rate of speed with its flashers on and recognized it as the stolen vehicle. Officers stopped the vehicle and arrested James Douglas Ray. Victim’s small Pomeranian dog was also recovered. Both vehicle and dog were returned to the owner.”
Before you start demonizing an opponent, which is your typical habit and mode of operation, you might first consider knowing what the hell you’re talking about.
First you said “As Brian’s mother Jump’s article attacking my son really made me angry,” and you allude to being a professional in the trade, “I work for the Coquille Valley Sentinel,” I take offense at your more than obvious lack of knowledge of the words you use. I never “attacked” your son in any article. That’s something I’ve noticed about you folks down at The Sentinel. You don’t appear to know the difference between news articles and opinion pieces and place them side by side on the front page as is if they belong together.
Publishing a news blog is a bit of a different animal: there is only a front page so opinion pieces are clearly marked as such and are not news articles. As a professional – get your act together, learn the meanings of the damned words. You need to really work at learning the meaning of words like opinion, article and credibility. Now let’s move on.
You brought up ethical standards. What ethical standards allow print media such as The Sentinel to print totally erroneous make believe articles, such as the one published a couple of years about a city council meeting that never took place, and then to rationalize it off as a perfectly normal policy and procedure. There have been others as well. I know of one article that was written and published by the publication you work for regarding the outcome of a meeting three days before said meeting took place. Ethics is another word you need add to your dictionary list.
Now – you’ve made a lot of accusations – I’ll admit that there is an entry in the dispatch log – I didn’t see it. I told you what I used to write the OPINION that I wrote. Now let’s get right down to the crux of the biscuit. In essence what I said was leaving a key in a vehicle running in a parking lot is stupid. Want to argue against that – go right ahead. Let me say it again: Leaving your vehicle running with the key in it while you go into the store is stupid.
stu•pid (st p d, sty -)
adj. stu•pid•er, stu•pid•est
1. Slow to learn or understand; obtuse.
2. Tending to make poor decisions or careless mistakes.
3. Marked by a lack of intelligence or care; foolish or careless: a stupid mistake.
4. Dazed, stunned, or stupefied.
5. Pointless; worthless: a stupid job.
I suppose you can’t see where one of those definitions might possibly fit.
I wonder what it cost the taxpayers to look for and retrieve your son’s car because he left it in running a grocery store parking lot and a just released jail inmate stole it. It was a conscious act to leave those keys in that car and the engine running for whatever reason. You can rationalize that fact however you wish, but the result is the same: your son is responsible – not me. I did not leave the car running. If you want pretend he is a victim, go ahead. But he’s only a victim of himself.
One other thing, if you actually believe I spend time figuring ways to take jabs at you because I don’t like you, that is fairly narcissistic. You might want to seek some professional help. I can assure you that I find you so inconsequential as to enter my thoughts even less than rarely.
Robert Jump
Opps! Well, now I have to eat crow. I am looking for Brian’s name on the police log that we get from CAD. I DON’t see it on the information that Robert Jump claims to have had access to. I still contend the article was uncalled for, no matter the circumstances, especially if a person wants others to think of them as a credible journalist.
Dian Courtright.
This was my nieces car that was stolen and I think you are grasping at straws and must have nothing interesting going on in your career to attack “victim” in the way you have, people in every city and town across America leave their car running for many reasons everyday while not inside of it. How about warming up your car in the morning while still inside getting ready to leave?? Your telling us you have NEVER left your car running for any reason? And most of the idiots who get out of jail dont steal a car three blocks away, its kind of obvious. Its amazing to me how you can slam “victim” but you dont hold the criminal responsible for this act, why dont you find some real news and idiocy to report???!!
People across the country may leave their cars running with the keys in them. They’re stupid!
Robert Jump
I noticed you cited Oregon revised Statute 811.585. That is very interesting, unfortunately a Safeway parking lot is not a “highway” and never will be classified as such. So i do not see how this is helping you make your case. I have another statute in mind that better applies here. 2009 ORS § 166.065¹
Harassment
(1) A person commits the crime of harassment if the person intentionally:
(a) Harasses or annoys another person by:
(A) Subjecting such other person to offensive physical contact; or
(B) Publicly insulting such other person by abusive words or gestures in a manner intended and likely to provoke a violent response.
I would pay close attention to 1B, i think you might find it interesting. If your wondering it is a class B misdemeanor. Up to six months in jail and a $2500 fine. In my opinion this would almost definitely provoke a violent response. It angers me and im not even the guy your talking about and im sure if i were him i would be contemplating a violent response.
On a side note (even though it does NOT apply here) 811.585 is just a class D trafic violation, thats a $142 dollar fine and no jail time. Same as answering a phone call while driving or improperley wearing your seat belt. Im sure you have never been guilty of anything like that.
Oh and if you want my phone number to make sure Im a real person its 541-404-8482.
I didn’t know the Award Nominees name – I didn’t harass anyone.
You could claim liable except it isn’t if it is true.
Let me know how that works out for you.
Robert Jump
WOW! I am a little surprised at your obvious attack on the VICTIM in all of this, and I don’t care who he is, the guy’s car was STOLEN! HELLO! If anyone’s intelligence should be questioned in this situation, it should be YOURS, Mr. Jump! As a journalist (or whatever you want to call yourself) I would think that you’d base your article on the facts involved in this case and at the very least exercise a little journalistic integrity, yet instead you have chosen to BLAME AND RIDICULE THE VICTIM! I don’t believe for one minute that you were not aware of who the victim in this case was, we all know you spend a majority of your day hanging out at the cop shop and I’m sure that at some point the victims name was mentioned, If you say otherwise, then not only are you an unethical journalist, well, than your a liar too! As if it wasn’t bad enough that their car and beloved pet were stolen, they have to then be victimized once again by a dirty little sleeze bag writer, like yourself! You should be ashamed Mr. Jump! At the very least, you owe the victims in this case a public apology.
You may find this hard to believe, but I haven’t lost any sleep whatsoever worrying about what you may or may not believe.
Robert Jump
I cannot believe that you would print this crap. We live in a small community. Although I agree that it may have been careless however your continuous reference to stupid/Award Nominee infuriates me. You have no business printing this garbage and victimizing the victim again. Does someone pay you to belittle the citizens of Coquille? I certainly hope not!!! I don’t know Dian, Brian or Robert Jump and I can still say that this is just nonsense and I have to agree that Mr. Jump seemed to have a grudge against the victim or is just plain nasty and rude… I have to wonder if he would have printed the same article if it was a elderly person, a woman or one of his own friends or family?? I would hope that if it happened to myself or my family member that this would not be presented to the public in this forum and in this fashion. It is completely inappropriate.
Shame on you!!!
Maybe you should be nominated for the DA Award. Dumb Ass award of the year nominated to Mr. Robwert
I’d have published the same “Opinion” even if it had been you that had left the keys in the car.
I leave the Dumb Ass Award to those individuals who hit themselves in the head with a hammer while proclaiming to be a victim and filing a lawsuit against the manufacturer.
Robert Jump

There have been others as well. I know of one article that was written and published by the publication you work for regarding the outcome of a meeting three days before said meeting took place. Could you elaborate Robert? I really don’t know what you are talking about.

I can assure you that I find you so inconsequential as to enter my thoughts even less than rarely. Oh come on Robert! You have mentioned me so often in the past that Wayne the barber teases me about it. He says you have a crush on me.
I don’t care what you say about me, just leave my kids alone, OK?
I’ll no longer beat this dead horse.
I hope your kid, or anyone else, doesn’t leave their car running while they’re in the store.
